Homeschooling Families Need Genuine Consultation

On 5 May 2025, the NSW Government plans to transfer oversight of homeschooling from NESA to the Department of Education. Education Minister Prue Car has not adequately explained why this move is necessary, nor has there been meaningful consultation with homeschooling families.

Shifting oversight directly to the Department of Education could further erode the freedom and flexibility that thousands of homeschooling families depend upon. Parents are concerned about potential increases in bureaucracy, rigid school-style regulations, and mandatory testing, all of which would make homeschooling more challenging. It may also become more difficult for parents to withdraw their children from government schools.

Genuine consultation with homeschooling families is essential to ensure the regulator has a thorough and accurate understanding of homeschooling, informed directly by parents and homeschooling communities.

Without proper consultation now, families risk future changes that could further undermine homeschooling freedoms.
